Barnsley Public Hall Disaster
Children came to see a film, many turned up at the hall but were still allowed in. To alleviate overcrowding in the gallery an attendant asked children to move down to the main Floor. Children rushed down the stairs of the hall to gain access to the ground level, causing a surge of people in the narrow staircase to fall over and were trampled/crushed by others. 16 children were killed and over 40 others were injured.
