The purpose of shared situational awareness is to support a common operating picture (what now only COBR calls a CRIP – commonly recognised information picture). This should form the basis of decision-making and probably constitutes the situation report sent up and down the chain. Note that it doesn’t imply that everybody has everybody else’s knowledge; it’s about the critical elements that explain the situation and which are agreed upon by the team as their common understanding.
